Mechanical Design - MEng Thesis

Engineering Design of Actuated Sensor Alignment Systems for Subsea Applications

Engineering design of an actuated sensor alignment system for a gravity-moored subsea sensor platform.

+

Overview

This project investigates the engineering design of an actuated sensor alignment system for a gravity-moored subsea platform. The system is intended to compensate for sensor misalignment caused by tidal forces and maintain the required sensor orientation at depths of up to 100 m.

Project objectives

  • Develop an engineering design specification for the alignment system.
  • Investigate suitable actuator configurations.
  • Evaluate appropriate materials and mechanical components.
  • Analyse the structural behaviour of the proposed design.
  • Use engineering analysis, including FEA and CFD where appropriate.

Technical focus

The project combines mechanical design, actuator selection, structural analysis and subsea engineering considerations. Particular attention is being given to the effects of hydrostatic pressure, tidal loading and actuator requirements.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

CFD Simulation of Flow Through an Orifice Plate

CFD investigation of flow through an orifice plate using STAR-CCM+.

+

Overview

This project investigates the flow through an orifice plate using computational fluid dynamics. The simulation is developed in STAR-CCM+ and compared against theoretical predictions based on the ISO 5167 standard.

Technical focus

The investigation considers mesh independence, turbulence modelling, pressure loss and the development of the flow through the orifice. Simulation results are compared with theoretical calculations to assess the accuracy of the CFD model.
